Our Favorite Travel Books

Traveling is usually a pleasant experience. We love to be swept away on an exotic adventure to explore new places. Sometimes we can’t afford the dream vacation our heart desires, and so we have to do the next best thing: read about someone else’s experiences. Here are some of our

favorite reads for your next travels.

1. Jimmy Buffett’s A Pirate Looks at Fifty

Jimmy Buffett’s name is now synonymous with tropical beaches, conch fritters, and margaritas. This memoir of his life is a whirlwind tour of his beginnings in the South, leading him to his love of Florida and the Caribbean. Filled with humor and light, A Pirate Looks at Fifty is a view into one man’s love affair with the ocean and his dedication to a good time on the waterline.

2. A Vagabond Journey Around the World by Henry A. Franck

Sometimes, traveling back into the past to see how it was done once upon a time is one of the most inspiring experiences we can have. Published in 1910, A Vagabond Journey Around the World was written back in the day when you could hide aboard a steamer and go overseas. Franck walked around the world with no money for his trip, learning and earning in each new location. This book is an entertaining read for anyone who longs for the golden age of travel and to see the world as it was in the old days.

3. Smile When You’re Lying: Confessions of a Rogue Travel Writer by Chuck Thompson

This wildly irreverent retelling of some of Chuck Thompson’s travels intrigues and enthralls. You accompany him on some very interesting voyages in places like Thailand, which are eye-opening in their hedonism and bizarre behavior on the part of the men who visit these regions. Thompson’s stories make Southeast Asia sound appealing, nevertheless, and are often a source of rollicking

good fun.

4. Man Eating Bugs

This is probably the strangest volume on our list of recommendations, but it is a fascinating look into other places and cultures where eating insects is normal. The photographs are quite stunningly beautiful, and the issues the book brings up relating to resources and food availability are an interesting intellectual exercise. Feeding the world would be much simpler if we did not have

prejudices.

Traveling is one of the greatest blessings in the world. You experience new things, see new vistas and learn more about yourself than you’ve ever known before. Reading these travel books can be great fun, but it also whets the appetite for yet another adventure.
